Treatment Options for Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Sexual Therapy
Sometimes, for those men with emotional problems, a sexual therapist may be helpful.

Drug Therapy
Drugs for treating ED can be taken orally, injected into the penis, or inserted into the urethra at the tip of the penis.
  • Oral: Phosphodiesterase 5 Inhibitors (Viagra, Levitra, Cialis) are prescription medications that can help achieve erections in response to sexual stimulation. The advantage is that it is convenient and safe. Side effects can include headaches, facial blushing, mild and temporary visual effects.
  • Urethral Suppositories: medicated pellets about the size of a grain of rice that are inserted with a disposable plastic “eye dropper” into the urethra. The advantage is that it is easily administered, without a needle. Side effects can include burning.
  • Injection: Many men gain potency by injecting drugs into the penis, resulting in increased blood flow. The advantage is that it does work well, in cases where other methods fail, and it is fairly easily administered. The potential side effects are that it can lead to scarring and long-lasting painful erections (priapism).
  • Testosterone: If the Testosterone is low, replacement by injection, gel or patch can be effective. Potential side effects include prostate enlargement and erythrocytosis (an increase in red blood cell count).
Vacuum Device
There are a number of different manufacturers of vacuum devices, that do often provide successful results. Advantages include a non-invasive, reproducible method that does not involve any medication. The potential side effects includes discomfort.

Penile Implant
An implant is a device that is placed into a man’s body and is designed to help him get an erection. Following this 1 hour procedure, a 6 week recovery period is necessary before the implant is used. There are 2 basic types of implant. The flexible rod implant produces a permanently firm penis, while the inflatable implants produce a more controlled, natural erection. Patient and partner satisfaction rates are highest with implants, because they are not visibly noticeable, are spontaneous and reliable with a very low failure rate.
